Thomas Holding invented modern-day camping in the early 1900s! In 1908 he published 'The Campers Handbook'. Camping has been traditionally an activity that families could enjoy at a low cost. 

Camping involved packing up the car with an affordable tent, some food in the cooler, and some firewood and gas that was significantly less than what it is today. Camping was also made affordable by governments- a true Canadian pastime.

Fast forward to the 2020s and camping is now difficult to access for many families. Camping at a campground can cost $25-50 for just one night. To secure a spot, most need a credit card. On top of the fee for the campsite, there is the gas to get to the campground, there is costly firewood and there is food that's increasing due to inflation. All of this and never mind the cost to purchase gear. A tent, sleeping bags and other camping gear are no longer affordable for many.

Camping used to be an affordable family pastime. It's now a luxury to many.
